Why You Should Never Use or Trust Free VPN Services – HolaVPN Botnet Discovered

Greetings, Hidden Router readers! We have some not-so-good news, regarding one of the biggest Free VPN providers – HolaVPN. Let us begin, by saying that our Hidden WiFi VPN Router and our Hidden WireGuard VPN Service provide you with the fastest available VPN speeds in the world, while helping you keep your entire household protected. All devices connected to our router have strong encryption, and still run a lot faster than any OpenVPN VPN provider. Now lets get to the news on hand. The widely used free VPN service HolaVPN exploits its users by selling their bandwidth to online criminals and fraudsters and “poses severe risks to the internet community, effectively making every device join a botnet.” security firm Trend Micro said in a report. According to the report, which was posted yesterday (Dec. 18), when users install the free Hola client application, they’re also installing software from Luminati, a sister company of Hola that sells access to residential IP addresses. Luminati’s clients appear to be primarily mobile advertisers, Trend Micro said, but they also include ad fraudsters, data scrapers and full-on cybercriminals, all of whom evade detection by hiding behind the IP addresses of unwitting Hola VPN clients. “HolaVPN […]

Linus Torvalds (creator of Linux) calls WireGuard VPN protocol (the one we use) “A work of art”

Hey everyone! We just wanted to share something on here, which makes us very proud of our VPN protocol of choice – WireGuard. You can check out the source from the mailing list at OpenWall HERE If you do not yet have a Hidden VPN Router – you can grab yours by going to https://hiddenrouter.com/router Thank you, James.

Yet another OpenVPN bug discovered (note – its a big one!)

These VPN Services Can Be Easily Hacked: What to Do The security of many well-known virtual private network (VPN) services can be broken by a relatively simple attack that reveals temporary data encryption keys in less than a minute, the attack’s developer revealed at the DEF CON 26 hacker conference in Las Vegas on Saturday (Aug. 11). Ahamed Nafeez said his VORACLE attack works against VPN services that use the highly regarded OpenVPN protocol (or similar protocols) by default and also compress user data before encryption. In other words – yet another OpenVPN bug has been discovered. These providers include NordVPN, PureVPN, Hotspot Shield, ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access. One service, TunnelBear, stopped compressing data after it was informed of Nafeez’s attack earlier this summer. You can avoid falling victim to the VORACLE attack by switching to other VPN protocols, such as IKEv2/IPsec or WireGuard, if your VPN service lets you (hint – Hidden Router only uses WireGuard). For technical reasons, Google Chrome is immune to the VORACLE attack, as are HTTPS websites, but everyone’s computer still has many other internet-facing applications that communicate with plaintext HTTP servers. However, this problem wouldn’t exist if all websites used HTTPS encryption. “It’s […]

Gone are the days of the Rolodex and the filing cabinet. At this time in history, an identity thief with access to a security breach can discover everything from a person’s social security number to the details of their bank account with the flip of a switch. Fortunately, there are many ways to protect our privacy at this time in history. Here are just a few ways that most of us might be compromising our digital privacy without knowing it, and how we can learn to protect our information and keep safe. Using the Internet Without Staying Up-to-Date on Privacy Issues Because the use of the internet has become central to completing day to day tasks such as sending work emails and checking bank balances, we often forget that it is easier than ever for our private information to be accessed by the wrong people. Staying informed about these issues by reading news articles on “hacked” networks can allow us to prevent a potential invasion […]
